Project LIFE Lesson Outline
SENTENCE WRITING
The Following is an outline
of the lesson format used Project LIFE classrooms on a daily basis. It consists of reading
three different text selections, writing word lists and sentences, a skill lesson,
modeling fluent reading and checking for comprehension. Depending on the ability level of
the group, the lessons last between 30 and 45 minutes.
Fluent Reading and
writing (5 minutes)
Select three to five known high-frequency words and/or
letters for the students to write on marker boards to build writing fluency. Have the
group chorally read one to three familiar books .
Running Record (5
minutes)
Have the students partner read or whisper read while
the teacher takes a running record on one student reading yesterday's new book. The
teacher's role is that of an observer. After the child has finished the book, comment on
strategies the student used (or could have used) during Their reading. Check for
comprehension by having the student retell the story. Finally, have the group chorally
read yesterday's new book for fluency. Students take this book home to read to their
parents.
Teaching Point (5
minutes)
Design a brief lesson based on the needs that were visible
during the running record. It may include high frequency words, chunking, word families,
directional behavior, looking at print in detail, hearing sounds in words, use of multiple
cues, etc. The students use magnetic letters, tactile letters, Wikki Sticks, pointers,
clay, translucent counters. linking charts, or other manipulatives to reinforce the skill
being taught.
New Book (10-15 minutes)
A new book is introduced which may include today's teaching
point. The teacher and students talk about the book using the pictures to predict and
locate any tricky words. Next, the students independently whisper read the book.
The teacher may provide support as needed, however, the goal is to have students read and
use strategies independently. Then the book is read again chorally to promote fluency. This
book will be used for the running - record on the next day and should not be
sent home at this time.
Sentence Writing (10-15
minutes)
Reread yesterday's sentence as a group. Have the students
orally compose a group or individual sentence about today's Running Record Book.
(The one they are going to take home tonight.) The teaching point should be
incorporated into the sentence. ie: if the skill lesson is on the ed ending their should
be at least one word in the sentence with and "ed" ending in the sentence for
tonight. The students write their sentence in a writing journal that is divided in half.
The top of the page, or try page is left blank for the teacher to use sound lines
in guiding the students correction of misspelled words. These words may include
high-frequency words, words needed often in writing, words that have a close sound/symbol
correspondence, or words that the children could learn with a little more practice.
Students begin writing their sentence on the bottom of their page.. Band-aids are
used to cover any mistakes the children may have while writing. The end product is a
perfectly spelled sentence. This sentence is written on a strip of paper, cut apart and
taken home to be reassembled and copied by the students as homework. Each child reads the
words from the sentence strip as it is cut. The cut-up sentence is reassembled and read by
each child before being sent home in an envelope.
